ChatGPT is a Tool, Not a Strategy

There has been a lot of debate in the past couple of years over the role of AI in business. People have been questioning their industry’s future as artificial intelligence becomes more adapted to employee workflows, showcasing what tasks are better left to be automated.

But what about social media?

We’ve all seen companies boasting their new AI integrations to help you write captions that will be engaging for your audience. Some companies have even dumped their social media team in favor of letting machines do all the work for them.

People think that if it saves time and money then it couldn’t possibly be a bad thing.

It’s a good concept but, in my opinion, a computer cannot yet replace the human connection aspect, especially with writing. They lack the individualized personality and nuances that make your message relatable.

Some programs are better than others at attempting to convert different tones, but they generally all sound a little robotic. That isn’t what you want when you’re trying to attract new customers and sell more products.

AI is learning and there will come a time when it really can mimic exactly what we want to say. I’m not even going to guess what they will do for job security across industries but I’m sure the impacts will be absolutely astonishing.

I didn’t write all of that to say that you should stop using AI, scrap every piece of content you’ve had written by it, and retract every good thing you had to say about the rise of artificial intelligence.

I’m only here to suggest that, in terms of social media, using AI to enhance your process rather than run it might be a more beneficial and effective way to make the most of your workflow.

Here are some suggestions on how to integrate AI without letting it take over:

Idea generation

When you’re stuck and can’t think of anything to post, especially when it comes to niche-specific informational content, ask your AI friend for content ideas or questions your target audience would have about your product or industry.

This isn’t going to negate you having to actually write your caption but by writing them yourself, you’ll have more unique content. (Which is what platforms are ultimately looking for.)

Audience refinement

Once you have a basic understanding of your target audience, you can start asking questions about them.

Make up a name for your ideal customer and tell your AI bestie what you already know. Then you can ask questions about what type of pain points they may have, the type of content they may gravitate towards, etc.

This isn’t an exact science but it can give you a starting point for creating effective posts. The more information you provide about your customer, the more ideas it is likely to have for you. This is why it’s so important to build customer personas in the beginning so that you can envision who you’re talking to and the type of customer you would like to engage more.

Paraphrasing

This is probably one of my favorite ways to utilize AI. It comes in handy when you’ve finally written your caption.

If you think parts of it could be written better or your CTA could be improved, just hand it over to your artificial intelligence and ask it to paraphrase.

You can also ask it to exude different tones of voice, shorten it, focus on a specific element, etc. There are so many ways you can have it modify what you’ve already written, which can help a lot in your creation process.

Once you get in the flow of creating, it becomes easier to come up with ideas and AI may take a backseat. However, it’s a great tool when you’re just starting or when you’re at a loss for what to post.

By implementing these practices into your process, you can get the best ideas out of your AI companion while still producing original content. Creating doesn’t have to take hours but by caring about what you’re putting out, you’ll see better results.
